Charles Vander Kooi - President
Consulting, Seminars

Charles Vander Kooi wrote his first seminar over 25 years ago while on a plane to his very first speaking engagement. An instant success in front of an audience, he made an impact on people when he coupled his true-life experiences as a professional estimator and contractor with stand-up comedy and a little fire and brimstone. Since that first seminar, he has presented over 2,000 seminars and continues to average 80 programs a year in numerous industries around the world. One word of caution--if your name is Billy, or Bob, don't sit on the front row!
Charles has been involved in the construction industry for over 4 decades as an estimator and upper-management employee of companies as well as professional speaker and consultant. He has bid over a billion dollars in work over his career. As a private consultant, he has helped over 1,500 companies in their estimating/bidding systems and has lectured to over 200,000 people nationally and internationally. Constantly in demand, Mr. Vander Kooi speaks at an average of 80 trade Shows, conventions, and associations each year teaching his philosophy across the U.S., Canada, Latin America, England, and Australia. He consults with an average of 50 clients annually, assisting in and improving their performance. He has authored several books to the industry and his seminars are available on audio as well as video.

In 2003 he created HardScape Magazine. For this Charles envisioned a new magazine to serve as resource providing a knowledge base for hardscape installation while also addressing the business needs of companies doing the installing.

Jerry Gaeta - Senior Associate

Senior Associate for Vander Kooi & Associates since 1994, Jerry Gaeta recently sold his design/build commercial landscape, irrigation and landscape maintenance firm he established with his partner in 1975. Jerry is a successful estimator who has bid hundreds of millions of dollars in landscape construction and maintenance projects, has consulted, and lectured for the Green Industry in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, and Guam and is active in mergers and acquisitions in the Green Industry. He is a keynote speaker for leading industry organizations, associations, manufacturers and distributors on estimating and bidding, overhead recovery, managing work crews and other topics for the Green Industry and teaches estimating workshops. Jerry has written numerous articles for many trade publications. He has been instrumental in developing software for budgeting, estimating, and equipment management for Vander Kooi & Associates; Chairman for the development of the South Carolina Nursery an Landscape Certified Landscape Technician Program and was awarded in 1991 Nurseryman of the Year, the first landscape contractor to receiv this award.

In the early 1980s when I was still a contractor, work dried up just like today. New housing starts stopped, interest rates hit 21%, inflation broke double digits, and unemployment was 14%. I woke up one morning $120,000 in the red. To make a long story short, I hired Charles Vander Kooi, got my finances in order, cut almost 50% of our workforce and got my business back in the black. I took the Vander Kooi principles to heart and because I had such a comprehensive knowledge of these principles, Charles asked me to be his senior consultant not long after. I know what you are going through and know how to help.

Ian Cooke presented his first "plant education class" nearly 25 years ago while studying Ornamental Horticulture in England. Ian has been involved in all aspects of plant propagation, garden construction, design, plant selection and education. He has received numerous awards from the Royal Horticultural Society for displays at their shows.
